About Papillons
Papillons were originally called Toy Spaniels and originated in Italy. Papillons are a breed that has been around since the 17th century. There are two types of papillons the drop eared which is known as the phalene and the up eared dog known as the papillon meaning butterfly in French. They were also known as the dwarf spaniel which dates back to the 13th century. Papillons are a long lived breed living from 13 to 17 yrs and ranging from 31/2 lbs to 10 lbs. Some can be larger as in other country's they tend to be larger. This all depends on heritage. They come in many colors red and white, sable and white, black white tan (tri) and black and white, lemon and white. It is said papillons were breed to be ratters however they were to small to kill their pray so they ran them down and tormented them till they tired and then killed them. This I believe as mine do the same to lizzards and love to torment the squirrels. The papillons are very high energy and do require lots of exercise and play time. They are also very intelligent and do very well in obedience and agility, this also keeps their minds active and keeps them from being destructive. In my opinion two is always better than one if they are home alone a lot, keeps them from getting bored. They are very low maintance as far as grooming goes. Do a sanitary and keep their feet trimmed and ears brushed you are done. They do well in both hot and cold weather, and thrive in homes, apartments, and farms. The biggest thing you need to know is that you are the master and not them. This keeps their respect which keeps bad behavior at bay. All dogs need a master to keep them from doing things you don’t want them to do. I do not recommend male or female as I believe it is personal preference. Both sexes are equally loving and trainable. The males usually have better coat than the females and the dark colors have better ear fringe. Hope this has helped you make a informed decision about owning a papillon. I can tell you they are addictive and you will want more once you have one. Take that from one that knows. Thanks for checking us out and hope to see you soon.
